This volume additionally includes Jacoby's L'Idea della evoluzione and Chernyshevsky's Osservazioni critiche su talune dottrine economiche di G.Stuart Mill.

First Spanish edition. The translator José Mesa y Leompart (1831-1904), who added a long introduction, was a typographer, journalist and political activist. He had been a member of the First International and was also responsible for the first Spanish translation of the Communist manifesto in 1872.

First Russian edition, second issue (?). This Russian translation was the first into any language. A French edition (Critique de l'économie politique) was published in 1899, an English translation followed not before 1904. It was Marx's first attempt at a draft for a comprehensive theory of the capitalist economy, and he himself described Das Kapital of 1867 as a continuation of it.
It was edited with a preface by Alexander Appolonovich Manuilov (1861-1929), a Russian economist and politician, one of the founding members of the Constitutional Democratic Party and rector of Moscow State University between 1908 and 1911. He was appointed minister of education in the First Provisional Government and after the Bolshevik revolution a director of the Russian State Bank (Gosbank).
There are two issues of this, both have Vladimira Bonch-Bruevicha as publisher at head of the title, both are dated 1896 and have the same collation. The present issue has Lissnera and Romana, another issue has V.S.Traugot as printer at the bottom of the title. The present issue has on the verso of the title a notice from the censor dated 13 April 1896, in the Traugot issue it is dated 20 December 1895. WorldCat records quite a number of copies of the present, but only two of the Traugot issue (UB Freiburg and SB Berlin).

The first appearance of Marx's name in print

First (only) edition. With printed dedication on page III: ‘Meinem Freunde Karl Heinrich Marx aus Trier gewidmet'. This appears to be the first appearance of Marx's name in print. Although Marx officially had no middle name, in his younger years he often added his father's name Heinrich to his own.
Köppen was a German teacher and democratic journalist and one of the Young Hegelians. He met Karl Marx in 1837 and they developed a close friendship and ‘his views were deeply indebted to Karl Marx'. In the present volume, translated as Frederick the Great and his opponents, Köppen pays tribute to the Prussian king Frederick the Great, who ascended the throne one hundred years ago, and expresses his aversion against the Prussian reaction. He sees an absolute monarchy with an enlightened monarch as the ideal form of government and expresses his hope for a worthy successor of Fredrick.

First edition. Usually remembered as the Anti-Dühring this is a comprehensive exposition of Marxist views on philosophy and economics and next to Marx's Kapital the most important book on Marxist theory. Engels here opposes the views of Eugen Dühring (1833-1921), a socialist yet strong opponent of Marxism, and notorious antisemite.
The first part (p.1-120) had already appeared in 1877; when the second part including Engels' preface appeared the next year it was added to the first part with the preface bound before the first part. Parts of it appeared earlier as articles in the journal Vorwärts.

First edition in Italian and first translation into any language. These ‘Outlines of a critique of political economy' originally appeared in German in the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher in 1844 (parts 1 and 2, p.86-114) with the title ‘Umrisse zu einer Kritik der Nationalökonomie'. It was published again in 1890 in Die neue Zeit (volume IX, p.236-254). It was Engels first important contribution to Marxian economic theory. A French translation appeared 1905.

First edition of the second French translation. The translation was done after the fourth German edition of 1890. It has the preface of Marx and Engels to the second edition of 1872, Engels' prefaces to the editions of 1883 and 1890, and appended La collaboration de Frédéric Engels à la Réforme de Flocon et de Ledru-Rollin.
A first separate French edition, translated by Laura Lafargue, was published as an offprint from the journal Ere nouvelle in 1895. That edition was followed the next year by a Brussels edition and in 1897 by a new Paris edition.

A first separate edition of Laura Lafargue's French translation was published as an offprint from the journal Ere nouvelle in 1895. It is here printed again, with the preface of Marx and Engels to the second edition of 1872, and Engels' prefaces to the editions of 1883 and 1890.
This edition is identical to an edition listed by Andréas, but for the name of the publisher. Andréas gives V.Giard & E.Brière as publisher, adding that a part of the edition was distributed with Librairie G,Jacques & Cie as publisher. Apparently another part was distributed by the French Communist Party, unnoticed by Andréas. The advertisement pages at end of this volume are from the original publisher Giard & Brière.

The present new translation was first published in Edinburgh in 1908/09. In their preface the translators declare that they offer this translation to the workers of Great Britain ‘not because we claim to have improved upon previous translations, but because these previous translations are the property of private firms and individuals' i.e. William Reeves. They nevertheless write that they ‘believe that it renders the original at least more literally than previous English versions'.
A new issue of this translation, appeared in Glasgow in an undated edition with on its upper wrapper ‘Price One Penny', and again - as in the copy here offered - ‘Price Threepence'. Andréas dates these issues between 1914 and 1918.

Second Dutch edition, first edition of the second Dutch translation. The first translation by Christian Cornelissen appeared 1892. The present new translation was done by the poet and Marxist Herman Gorter, co-founder of the first communist party in the Netherlands. It is based upon the German edition of 1890, with the preface of Marx and Engels of 1872, and Engels' prefaces of 1883 and 1890.

A new issue of the first reliable translation by Axel Danielsson revised by Kata Dalström. Danielsson's translation first appeared in the journal Social-Demokraten between September and November 1886. It then was revised by Kata Dalström and first published in bookform in 1903, with a postface by Hjarald Branting which was left out in the present edition.
A first Swedish translation by Per Götrek appeared shortly after the appearance of the original in 1848. This translation is notorious for its idiosyncratic, religiously manipulated interpretation of the text, e.g. its translantion of the last sentence as ‘The voice of the people is the voice of God'.

First German edition. Originally published in French (with London and Hamburg imprint) the previous year, by order of the Hague Congress of September 1872 of the International Workingmen's Association. It was intended as a justification for the exclusion of the anarchist faction ‘Alliance de la démocratie socialiste' of Bakunin and Guillaume, that, according to Marx, wanted to take over the International. The Hague Congress marked the break of the First International between anarchism and Marxism within the workers' movement. It was written by Engels with the help of Paul Lafargue, with a concluding chapter written in cooperation with Marx, and has appended the text of the 'secret regulations of the Alliance', and some other documents.
