author's travels through America with observations on the natural history of the country and its inhabitants,
details on the war and the characters of its principal actors, etc. Howes has called it the first trustworthy
account of life in the United States. Chastellux was a general in the French army in America and there
gained the particular friendship of George Washington. He also held a literary reputation and was a member
of the French Academy.
A work with an almost identical title was published in 1785 and republished the next year but this was
merely an extract from the present work, issued without a publisher's name and without the author's
